How come people always tell me they're sorry when I tell them about my dad in jail?

They're trying to tell you that they are sorry that you have had so much pain and abuse in your life; that you have a father who has been so much less than he should have been; that you and your mother were in danger of being physically hurt; that you have missed out on some love and nurturing.
