Radiometric Dating...not reliable?

We know the exponential decay rate and the half-lives of many isotopes. But how do we know that these rates have remained constant for millions (even billions) of yrs? And wouldn't many other elements react with the decaying isotopes, making the decay rate somewhat flawed?
