Auto insurance raised nearly double....?

I know there are some agents that are on here so I thought I'd post my question and see if anyone has any suggestions for me. I am a married woman over twenty five, with an ill husband who no longer works. I have two small kids and make a measly twelve thousand a year. My Auto insurance was about 1200 annually which isn't to bad for my two cars ( a 97 plymouth breeze and 2001 kia sportage ) with full on the kia and liability on the plymouth. My insurance lapsed less than a month, I didn't purposley not pay it, I just plain and simpley didn't have the money, I don't have credit cards since my husband got sick and so it's pay check to pay check. I went to pay it about 12 days after they cancelled it and they raised my insurance to 2100 annually almost double! I started calling around and that's what everyone is wanting to charge me, there is no way I can afford it and that's with the lowest coverage. I had one ticket for speeding two years ago. Any suggestions?
